The Audium

If you are going to the OPS Mid-Year Program 2013 in San Francisco, and you are ready for something COMPLETELY different, check out Audium on Bush Street. Audium is a theater of "sound-sculptured space.” It's the only theater of its kind in the world and the "performances” are conducted in complete darkness. Sound comes from all around –above, below, left, right, under your seat– to surround the audience of no more than 49. They use 176 speakers to do this and it is a TRIP!

The theater was funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The composer and audio engineer were both professional musicians and each performance is conducted live. Composer Stan Shaff is quoted as saying "I ask listeners to see with their ears and feel with their bodies sounds as images, dreams and memories. As people walk into a work, they become part of its realization. From entrance to exit, Audium is a sound-space continuum.”

AUDIUM 9 is performed every Friday and Saturday
