Color Consistency in Fundus Photography:  Strategies and Standards

Speaker:   Christye Sisson, CRA

While color management has long been utilized in the commercial photography world as a method of ensuring color consistency and accuracy, the same methodology has not been applied in the context of ophthalmic photography. One reason for the color differences in the appearance of the retina in fundus imaging in ophthalmology is the lack of a suitable calibration method or standard. This causes significant retinal color disparity from camera to camera, even within the same manufacturer for the same patient. This course will describe some of the methods and testing being explored to begin to identify a suitable calibration phantom and devise the best working/vendor practices to ensure color consistency in fundus imaging. This work is part of a joint ICC/FDA working group on Color in Medical Imaging. The student will learn the basic principles of color management, and how these methods can be applied to fundus photography. The student will also gain experience with the methods being devised to help manage across the industry.
