FAF and Optic Nerve Drusen

Denice Barsness, COMT, CRA, CDOS, ROUB, FOPS

This course will provide a detailed anatomical lesson of the optic nerve for the ophthalmic imager. Detailed features unique to the optic disc and optic nerve will be discussed using pathology slides, diagrams and clinical examples. Specific features and anatomical landmarks useful to the ophthalmic imager will be emphasized. This course is intended to go beyond the usual anatomical description of the optic nerve and to provide the ophthalmic imager with increased insight into the role of auto fluorescent imaging and/or diagnostic ultrasound for the documentation and management of Optic Nerve Head Drusen. Comparative studies will be shown using case studies. Upon completion of this course the student should have an increased knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the optic nerve as it pertains to axoplasmotic transport and the etiology of ONH Drusen, an enhanced understanding of features unique to ONH Drusen and best practices for modalities to illustrate their presence and nature with an increased understanding of the use of autofluoresence.
