The Hitchhiker's Guide to Tele-Ophthalmology
Pooja Jani, MD

Ocular telemedicine via remote expert interpretation is an emerging strategy for improving access to eye care for underserved rural and minority populations. The North Carolina Diabetic Retinopathy (NC DR) Telemedicine Network is an innovative program for retinal teleevaluation which aims to reach underserved diabetic patients at 5 primary care sites across the state. This lecture will review the medical need which inspired the development of the NC DR Telemedicine Network and explore the challenges and successes of implementation and sustainability for this state-wide program. Latest innovations and other global programs in tele-ophthalmology will also be presented, with a special focus on the clinical, geographic, and socioeconomic challenges inherent to facilitating eye care in low resource settings.  At the end of this course, students will understand the background and rationale for utilizing telemedicine in eye care, and they will be able to identify the barriers to implementation of tele-ophthalmology programs. They will also have a better understanding of the tools and techniques that are being used to address these public health challenges.
