The Slit Lamp Biomicroscope is the cornerstone of information acquisition in determining the condition of the eye, especially that of the anterior segment. An appropriately equipped instrument will also provide photo documentation of a wide range of findings. Numerous lighting techniques plus magnification help clinicians see the invisible within transparent media such as the cornea and lens, and amazing detail within other structures. This lecture will concentrate on these lighting techniques, basic anatomy of the anterior segment, and specialty procedures such as gonioscopy and vital dyes.  After this course the student will be able to properly illuminate and photograph the cornea, iris and lens, and name key anatomical structures of the anterior segment of the eye.
