We're new to doing FA's on the Spectralis. When doing an FA, when do you engage the ART button to capture single FA images? I was instructed during the 'lates', but I think the images look a lot better during 'mids' as well. Do you use it throughout the entire FA? (not including 'movie mode')

Welcome to the best machine for FA images. ART is set to 10 for all FA images, early mid late (5 minutes).
I never use movie mode as I can get better images by just capturing by hand/finger.

The Spectralis using the 55 degree lens captures awesome fields and has an optic 35 degree setting for nice mac images too.

Wish I had one of these back in the old days ...

I set the preset time for movies at 1 minute, but stop it when the transit phase is completed. We engage the ART for an image of the primary eye after the transit (usually around 40-60 seconds post injection). We capture the fellow eye with ART, then another primary shot with ART, and both eyes at 3 and 5 minutes with ART. We capture color photos on the Zeiss between the miss and lates.
On occasion I get a better image without ART; especially with excess eye movement. I also note that iris angiogram images are better without the ART feature engaged.
This is standard protocol for all our FAs, with both 35 and 55 degree lens.
Hope this helps- Spectralis has streamlined our angiography practice. We average 7 minutes total- butt in chair and butt out of chair.

We do similar to what Darrin stated in his post. We do movies throughout the dye transit and then all other images are captured with ART activated. IMHO, it typically only takes a very small amount of time for ART to make the images look better. I rarely let it build to more than 5-7 before I capture the image and I am very happy (and my doctors as well and they are the ones that really matter I guess) with the results. But you should always do what is best for you, just as Tom does what he likes best, even though I think my way is the best. Just kidding about that last bit. I've done a bunch of FA's now and am becoming confident with the change in capturing techniques between the fundus camera and Spectralis. It is a process to find what works best for yourself when beginning something new. Because of your comments, I am becoming more comfortable with every FA I do. Thanks again!
