Does anyone use Axis or another software type to accomplish the same thing?  If so how do you like it and how difficult was the transition into it?  Do you have a server on location or do you use there national server? 

We are moving toward MDI in the next few months, and the doctors really dislike the way MDI handles images, is this going to be much better?

We demoed Axis about 2 years ago for about 4-6 months and I really liked it. It was very fast to incorporate images into its database and because we use Ophthavision on our fundus camera, that part was completely automated. It did well with Heidelberg as well. I can only imagine that it has gotten better over time. I know that Heidelberg is coming out with a PACS system as well but I do not know when. I was fortunate enough to demo it at AAO in Chicago this past October and was impressed. A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, we used Anka systems Eyeroute. I loved it as well when we first got it. We used it for about 5 years but then the service was less than ideal for us. I don't know if that was seen across the board but IMHO Topcon did not support us as well as Anka Systems did. (No financial interest for or against Topcon). I hope this helps. We use MDI as well and it is certainly not a PACS system. We only put images in to append to patients charts so if we send a letter out the referring doc gets an ideal of what is going on.
