We may be getting a Spectralis and I need to anticipate our server needs for this system.

Does anyone know the approximate range of storage needed to archive raw Spectralis data along with the space also needed to save the image reports for an EMR. (we will have representative images go into our image management software and we will archive all patient data to an archive server. )

Given that we dont know what our "imaging protocols" are yet, just an approximate range of space required will be helpful starting point for us.

Patient pathology ranges from diabetic, neuro, retina, genetics etc. We currently do 125 OCT exams a month.

Thanks!

Hi Cynthia, I asked our network specialist here at Heidelberg Engineering and he said that you need to know how much data you collect on a weekly/monthly basis by measuring the content of your patients folders…then use it as a formula for annual consumption…then do a five year plan to calculate this.

Hope that helps!

Cynthia,

We use a Synology 5 bay NAS to store our data. I'm not sure how it is setup (Synology Hybrid RAID if I had to guess). We are using 3 bays with a little over 7 TB of drive space for storage for both our Spectralis and archiving for our Optos and we have had the Spectralis for about 7 years and the Optos for about 4. We have a little less than a TB free space left and we do about 50-60 OCTs a day and 10 Optos studies a day.

We picked up a Dell server with 18 bay capacity, and are currently running 8 SSD's, 960gb each, in a RAID 5 configuration. We're adding about 1TB per year in our main office, but we'll soon be adding the same server at two more offices and having them mirror each other at night so a patient can be seen at any of our offices with the files all being there, automatically.

We figured out how much space we were using by writing down how much space we used per patient for 25% of our patients, then multiplied that by however many patients we scanned that day. I did that for two weeks, and averaged the numbers out, but on regular-scan-count days we average 5GB of space per day. I haven't seen a 10GB day, but with two Spectralis in our main office now, and seeing upward of 45 patients in one day with 2 of our Docs, I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't start hitting that 10GB level.
