A year from now, one of my photographers will retire after 30 years of working as a clinical research photographer at the National Eye Institute (NEI). I'm thinking of converting her full-time position into a 1 or 2-year fixed-term paid fellowship in ophthalmic clinical research photography.

My vision is to open up the competitive application process, for this fellowship, to ophthalmic photographers, ophthalmic technicians, or biomedical photographers who are interested in learning, hands-on, about the principles and practices of ophthalmic clinical research.

The NEI is one of the National Institutes of Health and the eye clinic is located just outside of Washington, DC in Bethesda, MD. This paid "fellow” would report for duty at the NEI Eye Clinic of NIH--America's Research Hospital.

My questions are these:

1. Is there any interest in this type of clinical research fellowship?

2. Should it be for 1 or 2 years?

At least the extra year gives time to network and get a solid job that lasts longer.

my 2.5 cc'c

Tom Steele

Denise,

I think this is an outstanding idea. I am frequenlty approached by people looking to "get into the field" of ophthalmic imaging and this would be a great resource for these requests.

Agree with Tom that 2 years vs.1 year would a better option. I think it would be difficult to acquire good skills in clinical research imaging in only 1 year. Also, relocating for just 1 year would be more complicated.

Let us know how it goes.

Good luck,
