Jim,

I'm not sure how much dismantling of the optics you'd want to do. If the dust specs are on a surface that's easily accessible, there are a number of products on the market for cleaning sensors/optical surfaces. We have a product from Visible Dust called the Arctic Butterfly. It's a series of electrostatically charged brushes with a device to spin the brush to increase the charge before wiping a surface.

It's not something we use very often, so if you want to try it, I could ship it to you & you could return it afterwards. Just let me know

No proprietary interest...

Good luck.

My local camera store guy was in once and he had a special gizmo... looked like a q-tip but instead of cotton on the tip, there was a wider, wedge shaped tip that he would put a cleaning solution on and LIGHTLY wipe the surface of the sensor.

Naturally, I can't recall the name of the product... it was a few years ago and his family closed the store (after 50 some years) last year. I still have his mobile number so I will call him later and see if he can tell me the product name.

Jim,

We have the Winstation 5000 system as well, so I will assume when Prudence suggests dismantling the capture head, she means to simply remove the camera back from whatever fundus camera you are using... NOT actually taking the camera apart. ; )

Seriously though, I would clean only the surfaces that were readily accessable... the areas you can get to without having to use any tools to reach. And beware of the canned air! While it may remove the spots you see, it may also kick up additional dust that lands into areas you really don't want them on! If it's something internal, you should get the pros in there to do it properly. Then the pressure is off you!

A good rule to live by... "When in doubt, call in a sevice technician!"

I hope you are able to clean things up!
