Hi Nikki

I have never worked much with ICG and i'm curious what would trigger the higher level of caution/testing for administration of that dye v. FlNa?

Does ICG have confirmed risks for developing the fetus?

I'm sure i could google this...but i'm curious what others can proffer.

Thanks!

N. Brugnoni said:
The nurse who administers the dyes for us has been reading up on it I guess and it states there are lack of studies citing its safe use in pregnancy...

Hi Nikki,

It makes sense that there is a lack of studies on the safety of ICG during pregnancy. The same is true of fluorescein. It would be difficult to conduct a useful study & get willing volunteers or IRB approval. Because of this, most practitioners are very cautious about performing angiography in pregnancy.

Some surveys have been done on use of FA in prgnancy. I have these two citations in my reference list on FA:

Halperin LS, Olk RJ, Soubrane G, et al. Safety of fluorescein angiography during pregnancy. Am J Ophthalmol 109:563-566, 1990.

Greenberg F, Lewis RA. Safety of fluorescein angiography during pregnancy [letter]. Am J Ophthalmol 110:323-325, 1991.

At least one similar survey has been done on the use of ICG in pregnancy:

Fineman MS, Maguire JI, Fineman SW, Benson WE. Safety of indocyanine green angiography during pregnancy: a survey of the retina, macula, and vitreous societies. Arch Ophthalmol 119(3):353-5, 2001.

Hope this is helpful...
