I have a Topcon 50Ex system with an OIS Winstation that's about 8 years old. I am not happy with the image resolution, and finally got financial approval to start looking to upgrade the digital component. Anyone happy with their system (one that will be compatible with Topcon fundus camera)?

just looking for opinions..

thanks all!

TRC 50DX and MERGE set up is great!

Hi Darrin,

We also have an TRC 50DX, and an OIS system, with V10.6.45 running on it. That camera and an EX have been great set up combo's.

Just got a new tower from MERGE with a 1 TB up front, and on the back side as well. It's moving images GREAT! And also, now archiving to a 3 TB External NAS drive.

Just a question, what size OIS digital camera do you have on top? We have a 5.0, but I think they also have a 7.0 MP, and a 10 MP camera. Maybe do some upgrading there?

Also, if you don't have Windows 7 on your current OIS, I'd try that, have MERGE build you a new tower with that on it, and have them load V10.8.++ on it for you.

We love our set up, the MERGE guys have been fantastic, and, Joel Kirschner always provides 'top drawer' service.

Good Luck, and keep us posted.

Darrin,

What sensor are you using now? Is it a single back (color and monochrome) or separate? What's the resolution?

I've found that sensors above 4-5 megapixels have enough resolution, but some will seem "noisy" compared to others because the gain or ISO settings are pushed high to get adequate exposure especially when using a color sensor to do FA.

The second issue I often see is not spatial resolution (pixel count) but color reproduction. Are the images unsharp, or just poorly reproduced? Color reproduction is a bigger issue for me than resolution.

Any chance you'd be willing to post a photo or two to show us what you're unhappy with?

Tim and Jim-

thanks for your responses.

I'm using a single back, not sure of the resolution, but definitely below 4 mp- it's about 5 years old. it's more of a pixel count than color reproduction (although that, too, is a problem).

attached is an example image.

I am talking to Merge/OIS about an upgrade- hopefully that will do it.

Roger that,

I see the graininess you are talking about.

You'll definitely do better with a 5 MP camera, maybe even larger, 7 MP?

Joel and Brad will take good care of you!

Good Luck and keep us posted.

Darrin,

Image looks pretty good. I would guess at least a 5 megapixel sensor. Color reproduction looks good. The tiny bit of noise could be from the default amount of sharpening the software applies. You may be able to dial that back a little.

A new sensor may give you a little more exposure sensitivity, dynamic range, etc. Good luck shopping.
