Does anyone have experience with Topcon Imagenet for FA, ICG, and FAF relative to ease of use, dependability, and technical support issues?

I'm in a solo retina practice in Honolulu and currently use a Topcon 50X with an Escalon digital system for standard FA/FP.

We want to add ICG and FAF without turning to Heidleberg.

I would start by asking Escalon what their solution would be since you already have their system.

Does your current system consist of dual backs (1 color, 1 monchrome)?. I'm guessing you have both. That would be good since you really need a monochome sensor for low-light imaging such as ICG and FAF. 

If the monochrome sensor is mounted on a relay lens off the top port of the camera, you can add the necessary barrier filters in the slider there and the exciter filters can be added to the filter disc in the fundus camera body. 

The issue with ICG might be the optical coatings on the 50X and how much IR they transmit for ICG imaging. That's not an issue with the FAF & the 50X.

Hopefully someone else here has experience specifically with the 50X and ICG and can answer that part of your question.

Yes, we've used Imagenet here for almost 7 years and have been very happy with the results. We don't do ICG on our Imagenet system, but the FAF is great. We have both 1st generation FAF filters as well as the patented "Spaide" filters which are far more light efficient installed in the camera. 

That being said, I can't speak to Imagenet's current offerings since our system is relatively old. Our system uses a Redlake MegaPlus E3200 monochome sensor which I believe is no longer available/supported by Topcon. The newer sensors I've seen are reportedly far more reliable than the Redlake sensor, but the image quality wasn't quite as good (lower resolution & a little noisier) when we last compared.

If you are shopping a new system, I'd look at all the vendors out there, see what images look best to you and see if one system is the best fit for your practice.

Before a switch, you also need to be concerned about maintaining access to your historical images, if you don't currently use an image management system (Anka EyeRoute, Escalon Axis, OIS, etc).  You could easily be making bigger headaches by switching.  So you need to keep the past and the future in mind before any big expensive changes.

Have you tried talking to Topcon about replacing just the digital camera if you are concerned about it no longer being supported? Topcon software should be easily adapted for a different pickup.

 FYI- I use Topcon and Zeiss cameras at different practices.  And I use both Topcon Imagenet and Escalon Ophthavision software as well. There are advantages to each system, and disadvantages as well.  But I generally recommend practices not "mix and match" software.
