D. Landry said:
Can someone tell me if you can put Spaide AF filters in a Topcon 50EX and 50DX? Also, what's the cost of the filters?
Thanks!

Hi Darrin,

Yes. Assuming you have open filter slots. The exciter filter goes in the filter disc inside the fundus camera body. The barrier goes in the upper port/relay lens. The 50EX has a manual slider on the relay lens, while the DX has an auto switch (I think).

I've installed them in an EX without much difficulty. I had an open filter spot for both filters so I have both 1st generation Spaide filters as well as the 2nd generation patented "Spaide" filters and have run comparisons. Last I looked into it, you could only get the patented Spaide filters through Topcon. Not sure if that's still the case or what the cost is.

All this assumes you already have a monochome sensor on the upper port for angiography. If not, that is a likely a bigger investement than the filter set.

No financial/proprietary interest...

Hope this helps,

Darrin,

One practice we work for was quoted for Spaide Filters by Topcon for an EX. The practice owns 2 EX's, and only one of them was "OK" for the filters (we had to provide the Serial Number). The quote was a bit of sticker shock: we needed the filters, a new monochrome dedicated digital camera, software update for Imagenet, etc. The final price including installation and setup was in the $20K range, as I remember.

Hey, it's cheaper than buying a Heidelberg (but the FAF images may not be as pretty).

The practice has not as yet pulled the trigger - they are primarily interested in FAF for Plaquenil, and are referring these patients for Heidelberg FAF at Mass Eye and Ear.

MRP/Escalon quoted a lower price for FAF for another practice, but I don't think the filters were Spaide, and, of course, that practice uses MRP Ophthavision software.

Marty Rothenberg

Angiographics, Inc.

ok, so if a DX has the appropriate monochrome digital component, and open filter slots, what is the cost of the filters? Does anyone know? I can't seem to get that number from anyone.
