Waiting in anticipation vs. taking action

"Then I thought, boy, isn’t that typical? You wait and wait and wait for something, and then when it
happens………..”

Sharon Creech, Absolutely Normal Chaos

For as long as I can remember, OPS members have requested a salary survey to help them benchmark where they stand in our profession: a way to compare how compensation can be compared and used to measure the state of employment in many geographic areas. Especially now, in these changing times when health care is transitioning and embracing different philosophies, the value of learning where you stand in comparison to colleagues and other health care organizations is extremely useful.

Salary surveys have been done in the past by other ophthalmic personnel organizations, but not one done specifically by the OPS, customized to fit our profession.

Well friends, the wait is over! THE OPS SALARY SURVEY IS HERE, JUST WAITING FOR YOUR INPUT!

The survey is featured on the OPS website. Just go to www.opsweb.org and you will find that the survey is the very first item on the home page. You need not be an OPS member to participate, and we encourage all ophthalmic imagers to take part! All survey responses will be anonymous.

The current total of respondents is 121, (29 more surveys are incomplete and just need to be finished). Your completed survey will help that number grow quickly! We all work in the realm of science and understand how important it is that data be statistically significant, so the more responses we get, the more valid the data and our survey.

Please jump to the home page to find the Salary Survey. It only takes about 10 minutes, but 10 minutes that can contribute a great deal towards gaining important information of value to everyone in our profession.

Join us, and invite your work colleagues to do the same!

Thank you Paula for bringing this up. I too have heard this question many times and this question is especially important because of the difference seen in different parts of the country.

The information from this survey can be a powerful tool for anyone sitting down to negotiate salary for a new job or during an annual evaluation.

Not only should each and every one of you submit the survey but you should ask every other photographer around you to take the survey too.

Ultimately, this can only benefit you and our profession.

Kirsten

Paula, I wish I were as eloquent as you. I probably would've just said something too simple like, "Check out the survey on the home page." But you've introduced the OPS Salary Survey and summed up its importance beautifully. You've made me want to head straight to the home page and fill out the survey, but I'd already completed it before seeing your post.

For convenience, here's the direct link to the survey but I recommend accessing it from the home page so you can see the survey banner and the rest of the graphics being produced by Jen Thomson and the OPS Marketing Committee. They have several cool graphics on the home page right now with more in the works for different OPS projects. They are doing fantastic work.

Thanks also to Debbie Brown, Ditte Hess and the rest of the team that put the survey together for us.

So click the link above, or go to the home page and click the banner there. No matter how you get there, just make sure to get there and contribute to this survey to benefit all of us.

There isn't a week that goes by when speaking with our Executive Director for the OPS Central Office that she doesn't tell me about another request for this information. This survey is important to all of us in our profession.

Your participation in this survey is key to understanding where our profession has been, is now and where it is headed in the future.

I strongly urge you all to take the very brief 10 minutes to complete this very important survey for the future of our profession.

bob

Hey!

Thanks to everyone who has taken a few minutes to fill out the salary curvey. We got a great response last night, but you know how we are in Ophthalmology.... data sponges ( one of my physicians is referred to as a "data vampire"... "I need more, I want more".... )

The more responses we get, the stronger our compensation data will be and the more useful and meaningful for anyone wanting to use it.

Bring it on! You, your colleagues, other imaging friends. The more, the better ( and the merrier)!

Survey results are coming in and early demographic responses show that women currently outnumber male respondents by a 60/40 split. In practice setting results, University Hospital is running neck-and-neck with Private Retina Practices for the most responses. The largest age group is 45-54 and respondents with more than 20 years experience outnumber all other groups by a huge margin.

We expect to see those numbers change as more responses come in. If your demographic isn't well represented in these numbers, make sure you participate in the survey. Encourage your colleagues to do the same!
