Gerry,

I had learned this sad news last week, and have been wondering how Janis is faring?

Bob was a gentleman in every way- a quiet, talented guy.

We should all remember that we are never really in control of life, and we should seize each day and fill it with love and appreciation.

We have missed Bob as he has retired, but now we are truly diminished with the passing of this lovely man.

Very sad news. Bob was an incredibly talented photographer and a humble man. He won several awards for his ophthalmic imaging including the the first Csaba L. Martonyi Award in 2008 for his stereo image Vitreous Pearls. Scroll down through the award winners and you will see the striking image.

Here is a quote from Bob in the OPS Newsletter from 2008 (Vol 38, No.4):

"Having your work recognized by your peers is extremely gratifying. To win an award named for a colleague known for work of meticulous detail and aesthetic beauty is an honor I cannot sufficiently describe in words.

I am fortunate to work with a group of researchers studying the changes we effect with intravitreal injection. The photo titled Vitreous Pearls was of an eye which had been injected with intravitreal fluorescein and frozen. The posterior sclera and retina were then peeled away. The eye, which had been sutured to a plexiglass plate, was then placed in a plexiglass container filled with BSS. We set the container in front of the Zeiss photo slitlamp, and using the main housing modeling light as our light source, and a Canon EOS 20D camera, took a series of time lapse photos as the eye thawed.

When the vitreous was completely thawed, I turned the container to different angles until I saw what eventually became the final photograph. The eye was relatively young, and in the thick vitreous the air bubbles that formed when frozen now hung suspended. I connected the PC cord from the photo slitlamp to an extension, and plugged that into the 20D, using the slitlamp's main flash as my light source. The stereo effect was done handheld, with a sequential shift over four photographs. From those four images, I put the best pair together for the final submission.”

It was that passion for excellence, combined with technical ingenuity that made his images stand out.

My thoughts are with Bob's family...

Paula,

Your words certainly ring true. He was one person who tired to make a difference and I think did!

My thoughts and prayers go to his family and the great loss they are suffering.

I naturally think of our mutual friend and colleague Peter Buch who's birthday would have been Jan. 4th.
