I've used a DX, but with a different sensor than the Oscar. You should be able to tweak the sensor settings through the camera control software interface. It usually comes down to trial & error to arrive at good settings. Depending on which version of the software you have, you may have just some simple buttons with Gain & Gamma or histogram sliders for more advanced controls.

The DX is different than the EX in that the small pupil setting is controlled through the camera control panel on the lefthand side of the camera base. It's controlled electronically rather than a mechanical lever. That may help with your small pupil patients. The control is non-intuitive as to whether it's engaged or not. When "lit" on the control panel it's not engaged. Try toggling that back & forth the next time you try a small pupil. I don't think it works nearly as well as the mechanical apertures on the older Topcon models. The DX seems less light efficient overall and you have to tweak the settings and/or bump up the flash output to get consistent decent exposures.
