In Memoriam

Dennis J. Makes, CRA

11/13/1952 – 10/5/2018

On Friday, October 5, 2018 Dennis peacefully passed away at home, surrounded by those who loved him and whom he loved.  Glioblastoma took him quickly and painlessly.  He was a month shy of 66.

Dennis played an influential role in the early days of the OPS.  He served on the BOD as an At-Large member from 1982-1983.   He was Program Chairman of the first OPS Mid-Year Meeting in Park City, Utah in 1984.  During those years he also served on numerous committees and educational workshops.  He presented at numerous Scientific Sessions.

Dennis was co-founder of one of the first private ophthalmic imaging companies in the USA, known as the Ophthalmic Photography Workshops ( OPW )  These workshops were conducted in various cities throughout 1984-1986.  It was my honor to be included in this group as we shared critical information on an ever evolving craft.

He will be most remembered professionally as one of the original founders of the Ophthalmic Imaging Systems, Inc.  On the shoulders of those before them, along with co-inventors Steven Verdooner and Patricia Meade, Dennis brought one of the first clinical fundus imaging systems into the ophthalmic world, forever setting a standard of excellence for innovation in ophthalmic imaging.  In 1990 OIS received Patent #5220360 for their ground breaking system “Apparatus and Method for Topographical Analysis of the Retina” and the rest is history in the ophthalmic world.

Dennis was a born leader.  His energy and sheer force of magnetic personality propelled everyone around him to aspire to be more engaged, more informed, and more exuberant about the world of ophthalmic imaging.  I have called this man friend for nearly 4 decades and count him as one of my most influential mentors.  No doubt there are others in the OPS that could say the same.   I’ll miss you Mr. Big Hands and the ophthalmic imaging world is richer for having had your contribution.
