2019 Annual Program Wrap Up:

The Ophthalmic Photographers’ Society met for its 50th Annual Education Program at the beautiful Hotel Nikko in downtown San Francisco on October 11-14, 2019.  The program incorporated a wide range of imaging courses, workshops, a Scientific Paper Session, an awards presentation and a 50-year anniversary reception, making this 50th Annual Program a most memorable event. There were close to 200 in attendance for this program that offered 22 brand new courses!

The Ophthalmic Photographers’ Society celebrated their 50-year anniversary by having an awards presentation and reception to honor the OPS founding members Johnny Justice and Terry Tomer.  Mike Kelly, our OPS president, gave a wonderful champagne toast at the welcome reception to both OPS members and their families to commemorate the moment.

It was exciting to observe the honoring of these members who gave and continue giving to make this organization what it is today. Witnessing this respect, grace and dedication to education made you want to be a part of this distinguished organization. We had enjoyable moments recalling the history of the OPS and greatly enjoyed Johnny Justice Jr’s [accompanied by James Gilman, FOPS] presentation on the Founding of the OPS!  We were able to see many new faces and we reunited with old friends and colleagues not seen in many years.  It was a time of joyous laughter and a few tears for the ones we had lost over the years.

In case you missed it, Dr. Yale Fisher stepped off the podium during his B-Scan Most Interesting Cases lecture while describing a choroidal elevation and said to the crowd "I'm going to do something completely different, imagine this entire room is the retina. We are going to pass the beam from the outside of the eye, nasal to temporal asking what layer of the retina will we measure here” while waving his hands like a Tai Chi master standing at the front of the ballroom.  It was quite a moment!

We at the OPS, would like to congratulate and introduce our new Fellows: Gary Miller, CRA, OCT-C, FOPS and Don Kuitula, CRA, OCT-C,  FOPS.  Congratulations gentlemen, you both earned it!

In recognition of the many years of service to the Ophthalmic Photographers’ Society and the contributions to the field of ophthalmic photography/imaging, Paula Morris and Denice Barsness were each awarded the Outstanding Contributions to Ophthalmic Photography Award, which is the highest honor for the OPS.

James Strong, CRA, OCT-C,  FOPS won this year’s prestigious Don Wong award for his Scientific Session Paper titled, “A Proof of Concept Solution for Wireless Networking of Ophthalmic Imaging Devices; Demonstrated using the Natus Retcam 3.”

Olivia Rainey, OCT-C won the Chris J. Barry Award 2018 for best OPS Journal Article on Ultra-Wide Field Autofluorescence, posted in the Journal of Ophthalmic Photography Spring 2018 issue.

The Csaba Martonyi Award for Best of Show in the OPS Scientific Exhibit went to Katelyn Olney, CRA, OCT-C for her photograph, Corneal Edema.

The OPS also recognized another major milestone as part of the festivities:  OPS Executive Director Barbara McCalley’s 25 years of service to the Society.

This annual meeting could not have been possible without the amazing talent of volunteers and board members who helped keep things running smoothly, especially behind the scenes.  Barb McCalley, who is the heart of OPS, was unable to attend the annual program and we thought of her often during the entire meeting.  To witness the joining of attending members to fill her shoes proved what a family spirited organization OPS is.  It was an honor to be a part of this historical moment and be surrounded by extraordinary educators that made this 50th Anniversary, 2019 Annual Education Program of the OPS a spectacular learning experience.
